Associate Degree Programs

Accountant, Associate in Applied Science (71 cr) – Minnesota West Community and Technical College

This program prepares students to enter accounting.  Accountants examine, analyze and interpret accounting data for the purpose of giving advice and preparing financial statements. Accountants also post details of business transactions, such as receipts, disbursements and payroll.

 

Accountant:  Associate in Applied Science Degree (70 cr) - Lake Superior College

The Accountant program trains students in the preparation of financial statements, budget analysis, cost and managerial accounting, income tax applications and payroll accounting. Students also learn to use some of the more popular accounting software, including Microsoft Office, Peachtree Accounting, Great Plains Accounting, and Turbo Tax. A total of 18 credits of general education courses are needed to complete the degree. Upon successful completion of the A.A.S. in Accounting, the student should be well prepared to sit for the Accredited Business Accountant exam. This comprehensive examination is administered by the Accreditation Council for Accountancy and Taxation. Sitting for this professional exam is highly recommended, but not a requirement of the LSC program.

 

Business Administration:  Associate in Science Degree (64 cr) – Alexandria Technical College

This Associate of Science degree is for students who want to enter the workplace or transfer to a college that offers a baccalaureate degree in business. This degree is intended to give learners knowledge in the fundamentals of business while allowing them to complete general education courses within the Minnesota General Education Transfer Curriculum (MnTC).  Learners will be exposed to basic finance, and management principles, accounting, and personal computers. The program includes 24 technical credits in the field of business as well as 40 general education credits. 

 

Business Administration:  Associate in Science Degree (63 cr) – Lake Superior College
The Associate in Science in Business Administration program is designed to prepare students in general business administrations and management, enhance skills and competencies in current jobs and assist in career advancement opportunities. In addition, the A.S. degree program is designed to provide General Education Courses for students who intend to transfer into a baccalaureate program at a chosen four-year college. Specific transfer arrangements with the college of choice should be made as early in the degree as possible to ensure for appropriate program planning for enrollment at Lake Superior College. The program provides for electives in both liberal arts and business that allow students to customize their program to meet individual learning objectives, as well as fulfill varying requirements for transfer into a four-year bachelor's degree program at a chosen college. Students are advised to consult with a Business Advisor to ensure that selected courses will fulfill specific transfer requirements of the chosen transfer college.  

 

Business Management:  Associate in Science Degree (64 cr) – Minnesota West Community and Technical College

This degree is designed for students planning to enter the job market after completion of the program or to continue their education in four-year colleges.  It prepares students for entry-level positions in offices, private industry, civil service, and a variety of business fields. 

 

Computer Programming:  Associate in Applied Science Degree (70 cr) – Minnesota State Community and Technical College

This program provides the programming skills needed in computer application development, database management, computer systems, operations and data communications. Students learn to design, write, code, document, and implement computer programs for various computer platforms. They learn at least one minicomputer operating system, one command level language, one database management system, and programming languages. The program prepares students to design and develop computer hardware/software systems as well as design information management systems. It includes the study of languages, software design, science, and information flow and processing. Students study the design of mathematical and simulations models, and large scale programs used for processing and retrieving information.

 

Health Information Technology:  Associate in Applied Science Degree (64 cr) – Minnesota State Community and Technical College

Health records technology programs prepare people to keep and protect patient records. Students learn how to set up records and enter data. They also learn to maintain privacy and quality in health records.  When you graduate from an accredited program in health records technology, you can take a national exam to become a registered health information technician (RHIT). This credential is not necessary to practice; however, many employers see it as a sign of your competency and knowledge in this program of study. The exam is administered by the American Health Information Management Association.

 

Human Resources:  Associate in Applied Science Degree (67 cr) – Minnesota State Community and Technical College

This program prepares students to provide support to companies, and to individual employees, in the area of human resources. Graduates may assume duties in the following areas: communication with employees, employee data recordkeeping, policies and administration, employee and labor relations, employment process, training and development, wage and salary, and benefit administration.

 

Information Security and Assurance:  Associate in Applied Science Degree (64 cr) – Minnesota West Community and Technical College

This program prepares students to assess, administer and secure computer information systems and networks by performing technical security audits and implementing numerous technical information solutions to bring networks into compliance.

 

Liberal Arts and Sciences:  Associate in Arts Degree (60 cr) – Lake Superior College
An Associate in Arts degree will be awarded to a student  completing at least sixty semester credits in selected courses numbered 1000 or above with a minimum grade point average of 2.00. Courses must fulfill the categories of: Communication, Science/Mathematics, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Humanities, and two credits of Health or Physical Education, as outlined in the current program planner. Forty of the sixty credits must fulfill the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum requirements. The remainder of the credits count as electives.
